Shirley Watley Palmer

     Shirley Watley Palmer was born on 4 July 1820 in Georgia.1

Shirley married Mary Ann BURT, daughter of Joseph John BURT and Elizabeth Grace BAKER, on 11 December 1856 in Chattahoochee County, Georgia. A justice of peace, H. G. Williams, performed the service.

Shirley Watley Palmer and Mary Ann BURT appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 25 July 1860 in Cusseta, Chattahoochee County, Georgia. The household was listed as S. W. Palmer, a farmer, age 38. He had real estate valued at $2,000 and personal property worth $1,745. Listed with him were his wife, Mary Palmer, age 22; Allace [Mary Alice], age 9; Willis, age 7; and Thos. Palmer, age 15. The occupation of Thomas was farm laborer, relationship unknown.2

Shirley saw military service during the War for Southern Independence where he served first under Allum's Company, 5th Georgia Infantry (State Guards) for one six month tour of duty. He served a second six month tour in Fannin's Company K, Georgia Reserves.3

Shirley Watley Palmer and Mary Ann BURT appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 13 August 1870 in Box Springs, Chattahoochee County, Georgia. The household was listed as Shirley Palmer, 50, male; Mary, 33, keeping house; Alice, 13, at home; Willis, 11, farm labor; Anna, 9; Joseph, 7; Charles, 5; and John, 2. All were born in Georgia. Living next door was Josephus Burt, 35, male, farm labor, born Georgia. He is thought to be Mary Ann's brother.

Shirley and Mary moved from Chattahoochie County, Georgia to Rice, Navarro County, Texas, 1885. Some of Mary Ann's brothers are believed to have joined her in Texas. The Palmers purchased two lots side by side on Calhoun Street in Rice. Each lot was 25 foot wide by 100 foot deep. They built a house and lived there for about ten years. Today there is little left of the town of Rice.4,1

Shirley Watley Palmer died on 16 April 1890 in Rice, Navarro County, Texas, at age 69. The headstone is of modern origin and the date of birth of 1818 has been proven incorrect.5,1 He was buried in Rice Cemetery.
