Alice Ferrell

     Alice Ferrell was born in 1871 in Georgia. She was also known as Alice Friel.

Alice married James William HUNT, son of Benjamin Franklin HUNT and Alabama Priscilla BILLINGSLEY, on 13 May 1886 at the residence of Pascal Lowery in Autauga County. The marriage bond noted that J. W. Hunt was over the age of 21 years and that C. S. G. Doster, the guardian of Alice Friel, gave his consent to the marriage of his ward. The wedding service was performed by E. J. Tatum, JP.1

Alice Ferrell and James William HUNT appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 22 June 1900 in Liberty Beat, Autauga County, Alabama. The household was listed as James W. Hunt, 39, born November 1860; Alace Hunt (wife), 28, born August 1871; Zora N. Hunt (daughter), 9, June 1890; Josephine Hunt (daughter), 7, born October 1892; and John E. Hunt (son), 11/12, born June 1999. James's occupation was farming. He and Alice had been married 14 years and were the parents of six children, three of them living.2

Alice Ferrell and James William HUNT appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 21 April 1910 in Liberty beat 10, Autauga County, Alabama. The household was listed as James A. W. Hunt, a 49-year-old farmer, and Alice, his 39-year-old wife. They had been married 23 years and it was the first marriage for each. Alice was the mother of 8 with 5 living. They rented a farm on the Marbury and Prattville Road. Their children were John E. Hunt, 10; Hicks Hunt, 6; and Besse E. Hunt, 4.3

Alice Ferrell appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 9 January 1920 in Liberty beat 10, Autauga County, Alabama. The household was listed as Alice Hunt, a 49-year-old widow from Georgia. She rented the farm where the family lived. Her children were Hicks, 16, and Bessie, 13.4

Alice Ferrell died on 23 August 1949 in Montgomery, Alabama.5

Her obituary appeared 24 August 1949 in the Montgomery Advertiser, published in Montgomery, Alabama. It showed that she died at age 83 at the home of a daughter following a brief illness. She was survived by three daughters: Mrs. Bessie Graham, Montgomery; Mrs. Zora Roy, Mrs. Joe Tatum, both of Deatsville; one son, Hicks Hunts of Atmore (prison). One sister, Bessie Hicks, Georgia, 18 grandchildren, and29 great-grandchildren. Services held at Pine Level Methodist Church, Rev. Paul L. Nixon, presiding.6
