     David SHELTON, son of Stephen SHELTON and Martha GRAVES, was born on 27 December 1836 in Autauga County, Alabama.1
     He was probably one of the 2 males under age 5 listed in the household of his father, Stephen SHELTON, in the 1840 Federal Census of Autauga County, Alabama.2

David SHELTON appeared on a census, enumerated 1 June 1850, in the household of his parents Stephen SHELTON and Martha GRAVES in Wards 3 and 4, Morehouse Parish, Louisiana. He was recorded as David Shelton, age 13, born Alabama.3

David SHELTON appeared on a census, enumerated 1 June 1860, in the household of his mother Martha GRAVES in Morehouse Parish, Louisiana. He was listed as a 23 year old lawyer.4

During the War Between the States, David SHELTON enlisted in company B, 3rd Louisiana Infantry Regiment on 17 May 1861 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was present on all company muster rolls to June, 1862. On 31 Jul 1862 he was appointed Ordinance Sergeant of the Regiment. He was captured and paroled at Vicksburg, Mississippi, 4 Jul 1863. On a list dated Hdqrs., Allen's Brig., Shreveport, Louisiana, 29 Mar 1864, he was reported in camp for exchange, at Natchitoches, Louisiana, before 1 Apr 1864. He was captured 12 Feb 1865, at Gaines Landing and sent to Vicksburg, for exchange, March 12, 1865, from Memphis, Tennessee. At the end of the war he was paroled at Monroe, Louisiana, 9 Jun 1865.5

David SHELTON appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 25 June 1870 in Bastrop, Morehouse Parish, Louisiana. The household was listed as David Shelton, 31, attorney, with $250 in personal estate.6

David SHELTON died on 16 September 1905 in Bastrop, Morehouse Parish, Louisiana, at age 68.1
