Louisa SHELTON, daughter of Stephen SHELTON and Martha GRAVES, was born on 4 November 1833 in Autauga County, Alabama.1

She was probably one of the (an unknown value) females age 5 to 10 listed in the household of his father, Stephen SHELTON, in the 1840 Federal Census of Autauga County, Alabama.2

Louisa is mentioned in an 1 Aug 1849 letter from Mary R Evans 19, written a few months after she and her family moved to Morehouse Parish from Wilcox Co., Alabama, to her sister, Ann Eliza Evans who is staying in Claiborne Co, Mississippi, Mary discribes her new home and friends: "...You desired me to give you an account of the young ladies of this section, which I can truly & happily say will be very favourable. In the neighbourhood where we reside, we have Miss Clementine Croxton [probably Crookson], Miss Maria Phelton & Miss Louisa Shelton, who are all very aimable (sic), sociable & agreeable young ladies..." The letter also mentioned meeting another relative of Louisa's: "I had the exquisite pleasure of hearing the Rev. Peyton L Graves, formerly of Ala, preach not very long ago. He spent one night with us and in the very short time betrayed his inclination to enter again into the matrimonial state. He is waiting with much impatience for the arrival of Aunt Eliza; but do not upon any consideration whatever reveal it to her. When he left us he extorted from me a promise to write him a few lines when she arrived & he would come down immediately. But woe be unto me if I were to do such a thing and it became known to her." Sadly Mary Evans died twelve days after writing this letter.3

Louisa married Levi Pressley on 21 August 1849 in Morehouse Parish, Louisiana. He was first married to Martha Jane Hasson on 21 Jun 1844 in Ouachita Parish. She died in about 1846.1

Louisa SHELTON appeared on a census, enumerated 1 June 1850, in the household of her parents Stephen SHELTON and Martha GRAVES in Wards 3 and 4, Morehouse Parish, Louisiana. She was recorded as Laura Pressley, age 18, born Alabama. Also in the household was her husband Levi, age 28, a minister.4
