     Burrell Willis SHELTON, son of Stephen SHELTON and Martha GRAVES, was born on 3 September 1824 in Autauga County, Alabama.1

He was probably the male age 5 to 10 listed in the household of his father, Stephen SHELTON, in the 1830 Federal Census of Capt. Franklin's District, Autauga County, Alabama.2

He was probably the male age 10 to 15 listed in the household of his father, Stephen SHELTON, in the 1840 Federal Census of Autauga County, Alabama.3 He was reported "not to be found" by Tax Collector for 1848 on 4 June 1849 in Autauga County, Alabama. He owed $50 state tax and $25 county tax.4 He appeared in the household of William O. and Isabella Ormsby on the census of 1 June 1850 in Prattville, Autauga County, Alabama. The household included Mr. Ormsby, age 25, book keeper; Isabella M. Ormsby, age 20; their newborn son, William, Jr; James P. Brock, age 20, student; E. S. Morgan, age 30, mechanic; F. Pennymire, age 20, tailor; Wm. Morgan, age 30, drover; B. W. Shelton, age 20, merchant; William Healy, age 24, merchant; George Perlett, age 28, moulder; and Mary Brock, age 48. Living nearby were Shadrack Mims and William H. Northington.5 He sold his half in the partnership in the merchantile firm of J. Krout & Company in Prattville, Autauga County, Alabama, to Jacob Krout 9 September 1850.6

Burrell Willis SHELTON appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 1 June 1860 in Waterproof, Tensaw Parish, Louisiana. The household was listed as B. W. Shelton, the 38 year old manager of the plantation of Amos Kibbe. He was born in Alabama and had personal property valued at $40,000 and real estate valued at $27,000.7

Burrell Willis SHELTON saw military service between 1861 and 1865. According to a letter from Helen Whitby Abney to her daughter, Flora Jane, "...you had 3 great, great uncles on the Walker side, Burel, William and David [Shelton]. William was stationed at Montevallo [Alabama] a long time. He was the one your uncle William [Walker], Miss Anna DuBose and Camella Threadgill went up to visit in camp."

Find a Grave and Known Burials of Morehouse Parish show his a a sargeant in company F, 12th Louisiana Infantry.8
