     George W. BURT, son of Thomas W. BURT and Mary Jane ELLIS, was born on 3 April 1862 in Dallas County, Alabama. He was a merchant.

George W. BURT was listed as one of the heirs to the estate of Martin Ross BURT 18 July 1870 in Prattville, Alabama. His heirs included his living wife and children, plus the children of his three deceased children. The children of Thomas W. Burt, were George W., 8; Julia, 4; Nancy, 3; and Mary Thomas, 1. They were living in Dallas county at that time.1

George married May Barnes on 3 April 1889 in Dallas County, Alabama.2,3

George W. BURT and May Barnes appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 7 June 1900 in Orrville, Dallas County, Alabama. The household was listed as G. W. Burt, the 38 year old postmaster of Orrville, born Apr 1862, and his 37 year old wife, Comi M. Burt, born June 1863. They had been married 11 years (1889) and she was the mother of 3 with 2 living. Also in the household were their daughter, Evey Burt, age 8, born June 1891, and son, G. W. Burt, Jr., age 5, born Nov. 1894. All were born in Alabama.

George W. BURT died on 26 January 1937 in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama, at age 74.2

His obituary appeared 27 January 1937 in the The Birmingham News, published in Birmingham, Alabama. Burt Rites Held -- Services for George W. Burt, Sr. , 74, a life-long resident of Alabama and 2 1/2 years in Birmingham, who died yesterday at the residence, 7912 First Avenue, South, were conducted at Ruhama Baptist Church today by Rev. Dr. J. C. Stivinder, and the body sent to Orrville, Ala. for burial.

He was formerly in the merchantile business at Orrville, from which place he came to Birmingham. He has been in ill health several years.

Survving are one son, George W. Burt, Jr; three grandchildren, Miss Lena May Burt, George W. Burt III, and Edward McLynn Burt, all of Birmingham, and three sisters, Mrs. R. B. Hare, Mrs. H. L. Dudley, and Mrs. W. T. Cowan, Orrville.4 He was buried in Orrville Community Cemetery, Orrville, Dallas County, Alabama.
