     Daniel Smith BLACK, son of Peter BLACK and Mary Elizabeth ABNEY, was born on 30 October 1827 in Edgefield District, South Carolina.

Daniel married Julia A. MORGAN on 20 December 1855. They had five known children: Cordelia M. who married William Christian Scarbrough; Charles Martin who married Nancy May Whiteside; Effie M; Irene M. who married Sims Dodds; and Julia Morgan.2,3

During the War Between the States, Daniel Smith BLACK enlisted in the 51st Alabama Cavalry on 27 May 1862 in Oxford, Alabama. According to the Muster Roll for the 51st Alabama Cavalry, Daniel enlisted as a private in the Confederate Army. He was detailed as a blacksmith by Col. Morgan, was with Captain Coleman's wagons, and was paroled at Talladega by General Chrysler 21 May 1865 as a 3rd Sergeant.3

Daniel Smith BLACK died on 26 July 1900 in White Plains, Calhoun County, Alabama, at age 72.2,3 He was buried in Zion Hill Cemetery.
