Sampson POPE

M, b. 20 January 1769, d. 22 October 1829
     Sampson POPE, son of Jacob Thomas POPE and Elizabeth Dawkins, was born on 20 January 1769 in Newberry, South Carolina. He was an attorney, a planter and served in the SC State House of Representatives.

Sampson married Sarah Strother in December 1795.1

During War of 1812, Sampson POPE, George Washington POPE and Elijah POPE enlisted in the South Carolina Militia in Edgefield County. The History of Edgefield by John Abney Chapman tells a story of ''brothers" George and Sampson Pope. They are listed in Capt. Zachary Brooks' Company, along with their brother Elijah Pope and with Joel Abney, husband of sister Elizabeth Pope, and Azariah Abney, husband of sister Mary Pope.

Sampson POPE died on 22 October 1829 in Edgefield, Edgefield County, South Carolina, at age 60. He was buried in Pope home place cemetery, on Indian Creek near the Little Saluda River, Saluda County, South Carolina.
