     Rev. Joseph Duncan ABNEY, son of Paul Collins ABNEY and Dorothy "Dolly" RUTHERFORD, was born in 1802 in Edgefield District, South Carolina.1,2

Joseph married first Sarah SEARCY on 15 May 1825 in Warren County, Mississippi. She was the daughter of John Searcy and Susannah Cole. They had seven children: Dorothy S., Susan, Paul Collins, Elizabeth, John Armle, Joseph Duncan and Nathaniel Searcy Abney.3,1

Rev. Joseph Duncan ABNEY moved from South Carolina to Hinds County, Mississippi, 1 May 1828 when bought land. He appeared on the 1830 Census in Hinds county. By 1840 he was living in Jasper county.

In 1845 Joseph lived in Neshoba County, Mississippi, as he appeared on a state census that year.

Rev. Joseph Duncan ABNEY and Sarah SEARCY appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 10 September 1850 in St. Helena Parish, Louisiana. The household was listed as J. D. Abney, a 45-year-old Baptist minister, born in South Carolina, and Sarah, age 48 and born in Mississippi. Joseph had real estate valued at $80. They had three children in the household: John A., 16; Joseph D., 14; and Nathanial A., 10; all born in Mississippi. Living next door was their son, P. C. [Paul Collins] Abney, a 21-year-old farmer, born in Mississippi, and his 21-year-old wife, Margret, born in South Carolina. They had two children born in Mississippi, James A., 3, and Sarah J., 2.

Joseph married second Jeanette Scott Talbert on 25 December 1851 in East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. She was the daughter of Lewis Talbert and Sarah Scott Perkins. She had first married Virgil White. They had one daughter, Isabella K. Abney. Joseph and Jeanette were divorced soon afterward.4,3,5

Joseph married third Keziah Williams in 1852 in Mississippi. She was the daughter of Reuben and Mary Williams. They had five children: Mary, Reuben, Catherine Emily, David Charles, and Nancy Ellen Abney.3,5

Rev. Joseph Duncan ABNEY appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 18 June 1860 in White Oak, Hopkins County, Texas. The household was listed as Joseph D. Abney, a 58-year-old farmer, born in South Carolina, and Kiziah, his 27-year-old wife, born in Mississippi. Joseph had real estate valued at $640 and a personal estate valued at $800. Also in the household were Nathaniel, 20, farm laborer, and Mary, 7, both born in Mississippi, and Reuben, 4, Catherine, 2, and David, 2 months old, all born in Texas. They had apparently moved from Louisiana to Texas about 1865.

Rev. Joseph Duncan ABNEY died in 1874 in Hopkins County, Texas.3
