William Roscoe GORMAN

M, b. 3 October 1834, d. 5 January 1910
     William Roscoe GORMAN was born on 3 October 1834 in Georgia. He was the son of John B Gorman.1

William married Sarah Ann Elizabeth BURT, daughter of Joel Hurt BURT and Mildred Ann OWEN, on 3 January 1856 in Talbot County, Georgia.2

In the Talbot County, Georgia 1860 Census William was 33 years of age, a planter owning $6,000 of real estate and $15,313 of personal estate. His wife, Sarah A. S. Burt Gorman, was 23. They were born in Georgia, as was their child, Mary M. Gorman, two years of age. Gorman employed two overseers, Henry Snelling, 19, and Edward Williams, 21, both born in Georgia. Neighbors of the Gormans were Hope H. and Martha A. Hammack and their family, and others.

He owned a mill for grinding wheat and corn. and possibly a sawmill facility, located on Black Creek. The mill was located on his plantation of about 1,800 acres. The mill pond was a favorite site in the community for picknicking and camping. The "Talbotten Standard", for Tuesday, May 18, 1880 reported that "The picnic given at Gorman's Mill on Friday last was a perfect success. It was largely attended, and all enjoyed themselves hugely. The amusements were varied and refreshments bountiful."3

William Roscoe GORMAN died on 5 January 1910 in Talbot County, Georgia, at age 75.1
