John GIBSON Jr.

M, b. 1778, d. 2 January 1820
     John GIBSON Jr., son of John Gibson Sr. and Mary Gladden, was born in 1778 in South Carolina.1 He was a hotel and tavern keeper by occupation.

John married Frances Elizabeth Flewellen, daughter of Taylor FLEWELLEN and Sallie BURT, on 22 February 1800 in Warrenton, Warren County, Georgia.2

On 14 February 1805 in Warren County, Georgia, the court ordered that John GIBSON Jr. be appointed guardian of Taylor Flewellen Jr. replacing Shadrack FLEWELLEN, resigned.3

John GIBSON Jr. witnessed the sale of land from Elizabeth BURT to Thomas A. COLEMAN on 1 May 1812 in Halifax County, North Carolina. This sale of the land inherited from her husband, Joseph Burt, involved all of their childen excepting Joseph, Jr. and Stephen, who was deceased. An abstract of the sale reads: The widow Elizabeth Burt and the devisees of Joseph Burt dec'd. John Burt Exr., William Burt, Stephen Marshall and Elizabeth his wife, Jesse Burt, Zacheus Burt, John Mathews and Nancy his wife, James Burt, Richard Burt, Eaton Fluellen, Taylor Fluellen, John Gibson and Fannie his wife, to Thomas Coleman of Halifax County on the west side of Rocky Branch, bounded by Rocky Swamp Bridge, Hill's road, Hynes Branch, Joseph Burt Jr.'s line, Pigpen Branch, Greens Branch, Vinson's line, Rocky Swamp, which the said Joseph Burt Deed devised to the above mentioned widow and devisees in his Last Will and Testiment. Signed: Eliz. Burt (her mark), Zacheus Burt, Jas. Burt, Richd Burt, Stephn. Marshall, Eliza. Marshall, John Burt, Eaton Fluellen, John Gibson, Fanny Gibson, John Mathews, Mary Matthews, Taylor Fluellen, Wm. Burt, Jesse Burt. Witnesses: James Hightower, Oren D. Carstarphen, Hope H. Hatten, Timothy Matthews, Nelson Hamel, H[enry] Perkins, February Court 1813. Court ordered three commissions directed to Justices in Baldwin, Putnam, and Jones Counties, Georgia for private examinations of Mary Matthews, Fanny Gibson, and Elizabeth Marshall, which was done... Fanny Gibson in Jones County, Georgia; Mary Matthews in Baldwin County, Georgia; Elizabeth Marshall in Putnam County, Georgia.4

John GIBSON Jr. died on 2 January 1820 in Jones County, Georgia.1 He was buried in Clinton Methodist Church Cemetery.

CEMETERY RECORDS

John Gibson is buried in a family plot in the Clinton Cemetery in "Old Clinton," Jones County, Georgia. The cemetery is divided into two portions; one is beside the Methodist Church and is well maintained, while the other is on the opposite side of the road in the woods and overgrown. The Gibson family plot is in the wooded section, but is enclosed by a stone wall and in good condition. There are five graves inside the enclosure, John and Frances Gibson and their daughter Julia, and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Wornum Gibson and her child Elizabeth. Outside, but immediately behind the enclosure, are the graves of son Abner Flewellen Gibson and Frances' brother Taylor Flewellen.

The markers read:

"SACRED To the Memory of JOHN GIBSON, Born in 1778, Died Jany. 2nd, 1820, In the 42nd year of his age."

"SACRED To the memory of Mrs. FRANCES GIBSON, Who departed this life Jany. 16th, 1855."

"SACRED To the Memory of JULIA A. F. GIBSON, Born in 1815, Died Sept. 17th, 1835. In the 20th year of her age." This monument is located between those of Frances Gibson and John Gibson.

"Abner F. Gibson, Born May 23rd, 1806, Died August 8th, 1843, in the 36th year of his age."

"SACRED To the Memory of TAYLOR FLEWELLEN, Born in 1793, Died in 1833. In his 40th year."

The estate of John GIBSON Jr. was probated in March 1820 in Jones County, Georgia.

"It appearing to the court that Frances Gibson administratrix of the Estate of John Gibson decd has duly published a nine months citation according to law for leave to sell the real Estate belonging to the same. It is thereupon ordered that she have leave to sell the same after giving legal notice on a credit 'till the twenty fifth day of December 1822. And the persons who appraised said estate to act as commissioners to divide the negroes & assign to Frances Gibson & Wyley J. Gibson their distributive shares & make report according to law."

Page 87. Court of Ordinary, January Term 1824. "Ordered that Samuel Cook, James Billingslea, Jonathan Parrish, and William Flewellen be and they are hereby appointed commissioners to divide the negroes belonging to the Estate of John Gibson deceased, and assign to Horatio S. Whitfield, in right of his wife Nancy one of the distributees of said estate her equal share thereof, and make report of their proceedings to the next Term of this court according to Law."
