Contact Webmaster	York County was established in 1792 in Home District and named in honour of Yorkshire, England. York County originally encompassed a very large area extending as far north as Lake Simcoe and as far east as Lake Scugog. Areas of York County were later made into the counties of Halton, Ontario, and Peel. In 1954 part of York County was established as the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto. And in 1971 the remaining part of York County became the Regional Municipality of York (also known as York Region). Toronto was once the city of York, and was given the name Toronto in 1834. (There is also a Toronto Township in Peel County. Many early records gave locations according to township, and did not always include the word "Township." So if the reference states "Toronto," it might refer to the township.)
