YOUNG, Thomas
(d.). This respected pioneer of Wentworth County made his first
settlement in Sheffield, in 1832, when the country was a wilderness. He was b.
in Roxburghshire, Scot., in 1802, and received a good common school education,
and being a man of good intellect and fond of reading was well posted in the
topics of the day. He m. Isabella Hall who was a worthy helpmaate. Both were
members of the Pres. Church and took a deep interest in religious mattes, he
late Thomas Young being an Elder in the church for nearly fifty years. Through
industry and thrift he became one of the most substantial and influential
citizens of his locality. His wife passed away in 1859, aged 58 years, while he
d. in 1885, aged 83 years. Of their family : Mrs. Thomas Robertson is the only
one identified with Wellington Co. She m. the late Thomas Robertson in Beverly
in 1863. The moved to Puslinch in 1878 and settled on lot 8, con. 1.. Mr.
Robertson d. in 1887, and Mrs. Robertson purchased the farm after her husband's
death, and with the assistance of her sons has managed it successfully. They
had the following issue: Anthony, Thomas, John, Wilson, Isabella, Mrs. John
Gilchrist, Jessie and Margaret.
Anthony, m. Annie Gilchrist, and is a farmer in Puslinch. Thomas, John and Wilson are um. and work the homestead. Isabella is a trained nurse in N. Y. From: Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario. Toronto: Historical Atlas Publishing Co., 1906 |
