YOUNG, John
(d.) was b. in Co. Armagh, Ire., 1802, and m. Ellen Irving in Ire. He
em. to Canada settling in Arthur Township in 1838, taking up 100 acres where
Kenilworth now stands. He was one of the very first settlers in Arthur and for
a long time the neighbours were few and far between. Arthur was an unbroken
forest when John Young, the pioneer, came there with his young wife. He cleared
his farm and the roads came after he had a good portion of it under
cultivation. In 1854 he became one of pioneers of Minto, taking up and settling
on lot 92, con. C. He cleared the Minto farm and took an active interest in the
affairs of his day. In Ire. he belonged to the Church of England, but in Canada
he affiliated with the Methodist church, and his hospitable home was always
thrown open to the itinerant Methodist minister, or to the weary traveller. He
passed the remainder of his days on the Minto farm, dying in 1874.
His grandson, John M. Young, Reeve of Minto, lives on and owns the old Young homestead, where he carries on mixed farming. He is President of the Conservative Association of Minto, and was a Councillor for some years. While he is active in politics, he is personally a very popular man the township, and in 1905 was elected Reeve of Minto by acclamation, also in 1906. He m. Lucilla Doubledee. Issue: Frederick J., Ellen J., and Mary L. Mr. Young was appointed J.P. in 1906, and was elected President of the W. Wellington Agricultural Society the same year.
