WOODWARD, John,
(d.), b. Lincolnshire, Eng., 1824, d. 1905, age 81. He was a
wheelright by trade, and came to Canada when 26 years old. He worked
for more than 13 years in Beverly Tp. and then went to Orangeville, where he
worked for a few years. He came to Arthur in 1874, and purchased the
present homestead of 92 acres, lot 8, con. 7. He improved it and put up
modern buildings. The late Mr. Woodward had only two sovereigns when he
landed in Canada. He raised and educated his family, helping all of
his sons to start in life, besides making his fine home. He left behind him
a commendable record of which his family and the whole community are proud.
He is buried in the Mount Forest Cemetery. He was School Trustee for
some years, and was a member of the English Church, and a Liberal in
politics. In 1850 he m. Mary Culham, of Beverly Tp., who d. in 1900, age
73. Issue: Charles, in B.C.; William, in Arthur; Susanna and John C.,
on the homestead.
John C. owns and lives upon the old homestead where he carries on mixed farming. His sister Susanna keeps house for him as he is unmarried. William, b. 1857, lives on the 100 acres, lot 8, con. 7, where he carries on mixed farming. He m. Rachel Shaw. Issue: Mary and John. William and John C. are much respected citizens.
