WISHART, Alexander
(d.), b. Flamboro near Hamilton 1824; d. 1893, age 69. He was a son
of John Wishart, who came out from Edinburgh, Scot., previous to 1824, and for
some yeas lived at Flamboro. After the Rebellion of 1837, John Wishart, with
his family, moved from Flamboro to Eramosa, where he purchased 100 acres of
bush land, now owned by W. H. Shaw, Esq. , and still known as the old Wishart
farm. Here the pioneer and his wife whose maiden name was Jessie McKean,
resided until his death, his widow surviving him some 14 years, and d. at the
residence of one of her daughters.
Alexander Wishart, his son purchased his farm of 100 acres, lot 1, con. 6, West Garafraxa, from Dr. Barrie, and cleared every tree off it. He built the usual pioneer log house, and barn, and before his death replaced the former with a fine modern brick edifice, and the latter with a large frame structure with stone foundation, and other improved features, Mr. Wishart never entered public life, but was universally esteemed. He was a Presbyterian, and a Liberal. In 1864 he m. Ann Campbell. Issue: Eliza, set. Beaverton; Archie G., Alexander (d. 1901), Mrs. William Martin, West Garafraxa; William , Eramosa; Malcolm, Cassie, Stella, and Bella, on the homestead with her mother. Archie C., m, Miss Hester Milligan, dau. of the late Rev. Milligan pastor of Knox Church Beaverton. Malcolm, the youngest son, is unm., and farms the old homestead.
