WILSON, Robert, Sr.
(d.), late of Nichol, was b. in Kirkcudbright, Scot., in
1790, and d. in 1858. He came to Canada in 1844, and set. in Nichol, on 100
acres, lot 3, con. 5, purchasing it from James Gilkison. At the time of
purchase only 30 acres were cleared. Mr. Wilson raised a large number of
thoroughbred. Leicester sheep, and fattened cattle, but as was the custom in
those days, paid the most attention to raising and selling grain. He was a
man of retiring disposition, and never sought or held office, but was highly
esteemed. During the later years of his life, he suffered greatly from
rheumatism. He was a Presbyterian, and a Liberal. He m. Margaret Hastings,
who d. in 1848, at the age of 52. Issue: Mrs. Robert Burr, set. in Garafraxa;
Mrs. Wm. Dow, living in Fergus; Agnes, Christopher, living in Hamilton; Jean,
William, set. in Maryborough; Mrs. Wm. Little (d.), m. Margaret McNabb,
living in Fergus; Hugh set. in Maryborough; and Robert, Jr., all b. in
Scotland.
Robert Wilson, Jr., unm., succeeded to the old homestead upon which he has lived, all of his life. He in engaged in mixed farming, the same as his father, but pays more attention to the fattening of cattle for market. He has some fine horses, cattle, sheep and hogs, and his farm is under splendid cultivation. William, Hugh, and Jean, set. in Maryborough in the spring of 1870. The brothers purchased the east half of lot 9, con. 12, upon which they put the present buildings. In 1900 they sold to Isaac Walton, and purchased 50 acres, north quarter of lot 12, con. 13, where they have since lived, and carry on mixed farming. William has been Township Engineer since 1883, and Secy.-Tres. Of the Rothsay cheese factory, started in 1879. From: Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario.
