WILSON, Hugh, Sr.
, (d.). This worthy old pioneer was b. in County Tyrone,
Ire., and d. Guelph Tp. He m. Belle Gibson. They came to Canada with their
family in 1830, and set. first at Dundas, where they remained for one year,
coming to Guelph Tp. in 1831. He purchased 168 acres at 50c. per acre upon
which he settled, and with the help of his sons cleared the farm. He was a
sterling citizen, and was one of the promoters of the St. Andrew's Pres.
Church, Guelph, and an Elder in the church for some years. The Wilson family
were one of the first to settle on the line. They were only receded by the
McCuen, Lenox and Shortreed families. Issue: William, James, Sr.; Hugh, Jr.,
(d. young); Mrs. James Chambers, Mrs. Thomas Loghrin, and Mrs. William Orr,
all b. in Ireland.
William, b. Co Tyrone, Ire., 1812, d. Guelph Tp., 1868, was raised and educated in Ire. He m. Mary Gailey in 1849. She was b. in Co. Tyrone, Ire., in 1830, and still lives on the Guelph farm. Issue: Mrs. James Stewart (d.), James, Jr.; Mrs. John Awrey, Thomas, Anna, Bella, William, Jr., and Sarah J. James, Sr. (d.), m. Nancy Lynd, set. in Guelph Tp. His children Bella and William set. in Bruce Co. James, Jr., is unm. He owns 88 acres of the old farm, near the homestead, where he resides. Thomas, m. Minnie Ryder, and lives on his farm (66 acres) near the homestead. Issue: Frederick. William is unm., owns and lives on the homestead. His mother and sisters reside with him. His father owned in all 256 acres at the time of his death. He is an exemplary citizen, and very progressive, and the family from the beginning have been representative citizens of the community.
