WETZEL, Philip Frederick
, was b. Germany, 1841. He came to Canada in company with his
brother Henry, when both were mere boys. Philip Frederick being only 14 years
of age. They came to their aunt, Mrs. Clecker, Waterloo Co., and found
employment in the neighbourhood, and both became successful and influential
citizens. Henry had a shoe store in Listowel for some years and afterwards went
to B.C. Philip Frederick came to Maryborough Tp., in 1870, and has taken a
leading part in the community ever since. He was in the Tp. Council for some
years; a Director in the Fire Ins. Co., also a Director of the Wyandotte cheese
and butter factory, and its salesman for some years. He, at one time was the
owner of 500 acres of land in Maryborough, and while he yet retains 200 acres,
which his sons work, has practically retired form active business. In politics
he is a Liberal. Not only in temporal affairs., but in church matters he has
taken a prominent and active part, being a class leader, Trustee and Sunday
School Supt. Of the Evangelical Association Church for years. Few men in
Maryborough are more highly respected than Mr. Wetzel. He m. Christina Eberwein
(now deceased), and is now grandfather of fifteen grandchildren. His sons are
all farmer. Issue: Henry, Ezra, Mrs. John Wilkinson, Mrs. Geo. Pfeffer, Lavina,
Aaron, Frederick, Blundina, Mrs. Jacob Detwiler, and Calvin. The grandchildren
are: Ezra' s children, Vera, Muriel, Nellie, Blundina, Pearl , Verden, and
Luella.
