WATERS, Thomas
(d.), was b. Yorkshire, Eng., 1829, and was there raised and received
a common school education. He afterwards became a shepherd in Eng., and had
much to do with stock of all kinds, becoming an excellent judge of the same. In
1850, he in company with Mathias Kirby, set sail for Canada. The vessel was
shipwrecked, and they were saved with only the clothes on their backs, and
fortunately two sovereigns which young Waters found in his pocket. He gave one
of them to Kirby, and this was their sole cash capital with which to start life
after reaching Guelph. The late Thomas Waters purchased lot 8, con. 3, Eramosa,
where he lived until his death in 1897, age 69 years. He was by principle and
conviction a Reformer, and early took a prominent part in municipal as well as
local politics. He was President of the Eramosa Reform Association for some
years, and was Councillor and Deputy Reeve of Eramosa, being in municipal
office for eight years. He bred thoroughbred cattle and Cotswold sheep on his
Eramosa farm, and was President for some time of the Guelph Fat Stock
Exhibition and South Wellington Agricultural Society, also President of the
Eramosa Agricultural Society. His career was a successful one from every
standpoint, and was entirely due to his energy, push and strong personality.
