TOLTON Family, The , is one of the old and respected families of Eramosa and Guelph. The founder of this family was the late William Tolton, Sr., whose portrait appears on another page of this work, and who was b. in Brackly, Oxfordshire, Eng., in 1772; d. in Guelph Tp. in 1858. He came to Canada with his family in 1830 and set. first in Guelph Tp., where he purchased 200 acres, lots 9, 10 and 11, con. 5, and paid $4 per acre for the same. He was a tailor by trade, and followed it for some years in connection with farming. He was a man of strong personality and successful; a member of the Church of England, and in politics a Conservative. He m. Elizabeth Whitten, who was b. in 1772; d. in 1852. Issue: Thomas, Mrs. Edward Worsfold, William, Jr.; Henry, John, George and Joshua.

Of these, Thomas d. in 1856. He was a farmer in Eramosa for some years. His only child was William Tolton, who settled at Arkell, and was a waggon maker. He met with an accident by the premature discharge of an anvil at a 24th of May celebration, and lost his arm and leg which incapacitated him for his business, but he became a trader through the country, and was much respected and a reliable man. He d. in 1904. His sons John and Thomas, located in Puslinch.

William, Jr. (see portrait on another page), was b. Eng. 1813; d. Eramosa, 1901. He was educated at Oxford, and was a friend of Sir Roundell Palmer, who afterwards became Lord Selburne, and studied with him under his father, Rev. W. J. Palmer, Vicar of Mixbury. His dau., Jane P., has several latters written to her father by the late Lord Selburne, whom her father visited on his trips to England. The late William Tolton, Jr., m. Hannah Parkinson in 1832, who d. in 1887, age 76 years. Issue: Mrs. Charles McDougall (d.), Joseph, Thomas, Jr., William P., George P., Edward, John P., Mrs. Daniel McMillan, Jane P., Ellen (d.), Benjamin, David, Andrew, d. Sept. 23 1898; and Mrs. Lewis Armstrong (d.). Of this branch: Joseph went to the U.S., where he was Captain in the 4th Mich. Cavalry in the Civil War, and participated in seventeen engagements. He was wounded twice and had three horses killed under him.

Thomas, Jr., m. Isabella Sunter, set. in Erin, and retired to Orton. Issue: Howard, Isabella, Emerson, Albert, Mary, David, Hannah, Daniel, Bessie, Alice and Judson. He is a successful citizen, and has been Councillor and J. P.

William P. m. Alice Buckland, and set. in Waldemar. Issue: Harold, Walter, Alfred, Owen, Mrs. James L. Tolton (d.), Charles, Garfield and Horace. He is an energetic pushing man, and a good citizen.

George set. State of Washington, U.S. He m. first Jane Nodwell. Issue: Henry, Bessie and George. His second marriage was to Miss Auska. Issue Annabell.

Edward is President of the firm of Tolton Bros. Ltd., Guelph City. He m. Effie McGill. No issue.

John P., m. Isabella McQueen, and set. in Galt. He has been a machinist at Goldie, McCulloch & Co. since 1884. Issue: Alexander (d.), Margaret, (d.), Annie, William, Edward, Effie and Norman.

Miss Jane Tolton, artist, studio Guelph City, is a pupil of Prof. Shaw, of Guelph, and H. Hatch of Woodstock, who studied twelve years in Europe, and became famous as an artist. His pupil, Miss Tolton, exhibits at the various exhibitions, and obtains good prices for her paintings.

Benjamin m. first Harriet Hawes (d.). Issue: Ernest (d.). His second wife was Margaret Yates. Issue: Philip B., Wilford D. and Bertram E. He owns the old homestead set. on by his father in 1832, 125 acres, west half lot 15, con 1, Eramosa, called "Evergreen Home."

David, is of Tolton Bros., Ltd., Guelph City. He m. Eliza Hawes. Issue Alice, a graduate of Alma College, where she won the medal for general deportment, and also the scholarship for the best collection of charcoal drawings. She is now pursuing her art studies in Toronto; Ernest (d.), David L. and Anna M.

Andrew (d.) m. first, Helen Hawes. Issue: Ernest and William, (both d.). His second wife was Hannah Hawes. Issue Ellen, Edna M., Ethel, Harriet and Stanley A. He was of an inventive turn of mind, and with his brother David invented many useful patents in agricultural implements and other mechanical devices in use at the present time.

The firm of Tolton Bros. Was started in 1875, and was composed of Andrew, David, John P. and Benjamin, and Alexander Like, who d. in 1878. IN 1887 John P. and Benjamin left the firm, and on Andrew's death it was continued by David Tolton, W. H. Conway and George A. Dickieson, as partners. In 1904 it was incorporated with Christopher Kloepfer as President. The stock in now in the hands of the three brothers, Edward, David and Benjamin, and members of their family. Edward is President, Benjamin Vice-President, and David Sec'y. and General Manager. It is one of the most successful manufacturing establishments in Guelph. Their success has been attributed to manufacturing specialties of their own invention and protected by patents.

Henry Tolton,, son of the late William Tolton, Sr., m. Nancy Smith (d.). Issue: James, John S., Archibald, Edwin, ex-M.P.; and Jane (d.). His second wife was Eleanor Goble, no issue.

James, set. on a bush farm in Brant Tp., 1863, and was m. to Bessie Parkinson in 1866. He was a member of the Municipal Council of Brant Tp. for sixteen years, of which he filled the position of Reeve for ten years, and was Warden of the County in 1881, besides filling other public situations in the gift of his fellow citizens. He also unsuccessfully contested the East Riding of Bruce in the Patron interest for the House of Commons in the general election of 1896.

John S. Tolton first set. upon a bush farm in Brant Tp., 1862, but soon afterwards left it and engaged in the produce business in the town of Walkerton. He m. Nellie Horsnell, on of an old Guelph family. For a number of years he was a member of the Town Council and Councilor and Reeve.

Archibald has been a member of the Walkerton Town Council for many years. He is retired at Walkerton.

Edwin Tolton, ex-M.P., is engaged in the grain business at Clifford, where he has resided thirty years. He was a member of the County Council for ten years, and was also Warden of the County. He represented North Wellington in the House of Commons, and is a prominent man in North Wellington.

John Tolton, son of William, Sr., m. Jane McCormick. Issue: Arthur, Robert, Charles, Albert, Sidney, John, Eliza and William. He was a very successful man, and highly respected. He owned a farm on the Eramosa road in Guelph Tp.

Joshua, b. 1824; d. at Owen Sound in 1864. He m. first, Kittie Hopgood, Issue: Mrs. Garvey, of Kilsyth, and Mrs. Daniel McDougall, of Erin (d.). He m. second, Hannah Parkinson. Issue: Mrs. Jay, at Meaford; Josiah, in Wiarton; Hattie (d.), Daniel, in Mo.; and Mary, Owen Sound.

George, b. in 1820, came to Canada with his parents in 1830, and was practically raised in Guelph Tp. He m. Isabella Hogg, who d. in 1903, age 60. In 1848 he visited Eng., and spent the summer there. In 1851 he left the farm and came to Guelph, where he kept a grocery for some years, and then became a grain buyer, which occupation he continued until his death in 1906. He was a man of strict integrity, and enjoyed the respect and confidence of a large acquaintance. He was a member of the English church, and in politics a Conservative. Issue: Charles E., in London, Ont.; George (d.), and Harry, who m. Miss Andrew, and is a manufacturer in Toronto and Berlin.
