THRING, William A
. (d.), was b. in Suffolk, Eng. He was educated at Eton and Oxford, and became
a barrister. He came to Canada with considerable means in 1836, and purchased
100 acres on lots 9 to 12, con. 1D., Guelph Tp., where he lived until his death
in 1861. He m. Rachael Webster in 1841. She d. 1902, age 85 years. The late Wm.
A. Thring was what might be termed a book farmer. His life from childhood had
been devoted to the acquirement of his education, and he was illy fitted for
bush life in a new country, but he adapted himself to the conditions, and,
under the circumstances, made a creditable showing. It is the opinion of the
older settlers, who were well acquainted with him, that had practiced his
profession in Guelph, instead of engaging in agriculture, e would undoubtedly
have achieved a great success. He left the following issue: Francis W., Mrs.
Metcalf, Mrs. Luttrell, Edward, William H., John, Alexander, Mrs. Nesbit and
James.
Francis W. m. Elsie McConachie, set. Owen Sound. Issue: William, Annie, Alex. and Bertha. Edward m. first Maggie Amos, set, Garafraxa. Issue: Margaret. Second wife, Eliza Connolly. Issue: Wesley, Mabel and Lulu. John m. Josie A. Hewar, set. in Eramosa, lot 25, con. 7, where he owns 110 acres and carries on mixed farming. He started in life on his own account at the age of fourteen years, and his success has been due to his own exertions. Issue: Ella, Archibald, Frederick and Emma. Alexander d. unm. He was a miller in Minneapolis. William H. and James are unm. They own the homestead farm in Guelph Tp., which they operate in conjunction.
