THOMPSON, James
, of Maryborough Tp., was b. in Co. Leitrim,, Ire. in 1828. His father died
when he was young, and in 1842 he came to Canada with his mother and sister.
They stopped a while in Cobourg, going to Wellesley Tp. in 1849. A few years
later he came to Maryborough, being one of its first settlers. He m. Eliza
Carroll, of Cavan, Ire. He purchased 100 acres of bush land, and cleared it,
later purchasing 55 acres more. Mr. Thompson, although he has been an active
man, and has seen both hard work and hardships, is still living, and is well
preserved for a man of his years. He has been successful in life, having
started with nothing and acquired a fine property. He is a first class citizen,
and enjoys the confidence and respect of the community of which he has been
such a long and useful member.
John A. Thompson, the adopted son of James Thompson, runs the farm, making a specialty of thoroughbred Durham cattle. The farm is a very attractive one; it is in a high state of cultivation and contains first class buildings and improvements. He m. Alice J. Waters. Issue: Eliza J., James A., Luella and Viola M. Mr. Thompson is active in church matters, being a member of the Presbyterian church, and on its Managing Committee. From: Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario.
