THOMPSON Family, The . The late Edward V. and William Thompson, of the West End road, Guelph Tp. belong to the Thompsons of Hampshire, Eng., and were sons of the late Admiral John R. Thompson, who served with distinction in the British Navy for years. (The Thompsons are a naval family, the father of Admiral John R. Thompson being an Admiral, and his father before him a Commodore.)

Admiral John R. Thompson had a son Charles, a General in the Indian army, and another son Thomas, an Admiral. Admiral John R. Thompson d. in 1862, age 86 years.

Edward V., and William, came to Canada in 1832, and purchased 100 acres of land each, on the West End road, where they kept bachelor's hall for some time, until Edward was m.. They came with means to Canada, and had been educated according to their station in life in England. While they assisted at clearing their farms, they did a great deal of hunting and fishing. William was an expert cricketer, and went to New York as a member of a picked team.

Edward V. was a great supporter of Canadian sports, shooting, cricket, etc. William was the first Clerk in Guelph Tp., and held the position until his death in 1856. He d. unm. Edward V. was b. in 1818; d. 1889. He m. Ann Lynch. He never sought or held municipal office. In the trouble of 1837-8 he was a Lieutenant, and served on the Niagara peninsula. He was a member of the Church of England, and in politics a Conservative. He succeeded to the West End road farm, where he lived until his death. Issue: John R., a large rancher in Alberta; George H., Edward V., Jr.; William A., who was educated as a civil engineer, and was for fifteen years land examiner for the Hudson Bay Co., and is now in the employ of the C. P. R. in the North-West; Frederick H., who is a barrister in Mitchell, and Mary Thompson and Mrs. Edward Huger Wells, who reside in Guelph City.

George H. and Edward V., Jr., own the old homestead on the West End road, where they reside. They own and work conjointly 330 acres of land, and are among the most prominent citizens of Guelph Tp. Edward V., Jr., m. Mary, dau. of the late George Mercer, of Guelph. Issue: Edward V., Maynard K., and Georgina G.

The Thompsons are strong Conservatives.
