TERNAN, Gregory
, was b. Co. Fermanagh, Ire., in 1844. He was the youngest son of the later
Gregory Ternan, and came to Canada in 1849 with his parents, settling in
Arthur. He purchased his present homestead of 252 acres, lot 25, con. 2, which
was all bush at the time. He had to contend with frosts, and all of the other
incidental hardships in connection with pioneer life; all of his provisions had
to be brought in from Fergus with ox teams. The present homestead cost $90 when
Mr. Ternan purchased it, and is now assessed for $8,000. His house and other
buildings would so credit to a city. This branch of the Ternan family never had
any financial aid , having acquired all of their property by their own
exertions. Mr. Ternan is held in the highest esteem, and has given his sons a
good education and a start in life. He is a member of the English church, and a
Conservative. In 1871 he m. Emily Hathaway. Issue: William E., Henry, N.W.T.;
Albert and Florence at home.
