STRANGWAYS, George
(d.). George J. Strangways was b. in Hampshire, Eng. in 1827, and d. in 1902.
He came to Canada when a young man of 18, and landed in Toronto in 1843, and
went to Simcoe County where his two brothers, Charles and Frederick, were
living, who had come to the country three years before, and like his two elder
brothers, suffered the hardships of pioneer life. He was a carpenter and a
contractor, and built a number of the principal buildings in Schomberg and
locality. Mr. Strangways was very fond of hunting and many a deer and other
wild animal of the forest were laid low by his gun. He came to Pilkington in
1854, and bought the farm on lot 11, con. B, now owned by his son John. At that
time it was one dense forest, and is now known as one of the best farms in that
locality. He was a Methodist, and was active in the affairs of the church. In
politics he was a Liberal, and he held the office of School Trustee and
Magistrate for many years. He m. Sarah Whittaker, b. in Queen's Co., Ireland,
in 1830, who is living at the age of 75. Issue: Mrs. A. McIntosh, set. Kingston
(d.); Frederick, m. Mary Moore, set. Perth Co.; Bertha, Minnie, George, unm.
set. Pilkington; Mary A., a trained nurse in Brainerd, Minn.; Mrs. Joseph Hall,
set. Pilkington, and Henrietta, John, lives on the homestead, and is a
successful young farmer. He carries on mixed farming, and keeps grade cattle of
the best quality and pedigreed Yorkshire and Chester hogs. He is a Methodist,
and a Liberal in politics.
