STRANGWAYS, Charles
, of Pilkington, was b. in Hampshire, Eng., in 1819, and came to Canada in 1840
with his brother Frederick, landing first in Toronto, which at that time was a
small village. From Toronto they went to Innisfil in Simcoe Co., where they
remained for a few years, but Charles not being satisfied with conditions
there, in 1849 he and his wife put their bedding, and a few other things into
an ox sleigh and started through the bush, for a home where they have since
lived. It was necessary to chop the way as they went along, and wolves and
bears were plentiful in the forests at that time. Mr. Strangways is a
well-educated man, and very active for his years, apparently being good for
many years to come. He does odd chores on the farm, and he and his aged wife
are a happy couple, surrounded by children and friends. He is a Methodist, and
for many years superintendent of the Sunday school of Tabor Church. In politics
he is a Conservative, and has held the office of School Trustee, He m. Susanna
