STINSON, John ,
(d.) was b. Ire., in 1824; d. 1898, at the age of 74. He came to
Canada with his parents in 1840, and worked for over two years at a distillery
in Weston. In 1843 he went to Downie Tp., and purchased 100 acres from the
Canada Co. After enduring hardships and privations little understood by the
young people of to-day, he succeeded in clearing his farm. In 1872 he sold it
for $4,000, and purchased in Maryborough 100 acres, the west half of lot 8,
con. 3, and lived upon it until his death. He was a very successful man,
starting early in life without means, and by his own efforts acquiring a
considerable fortune. He was a very aggressive man, of great personal activity,
of fine appearance, and always well dressed. He was a Roman Catholic and a
Liberal. In 1842 he m. Jane Johnson, who d. in 1899, age 82. Issue: John (d.),
Mrs. Kidd, and Mrs. John Law, Maryborough; Robert (d.), Edward, Elora; William,
in Peel, and Patrick.
Patrick, b. in Downie Tp., in 1862, was 10 years old when he came to Maryborough with his parents. He owns the old homestead, 100 acres, the west half, lot 8 con. 3, also 100 acres, west half of lot 10, con. 2, and 100 acres, the west half of lot 10, con. 3. He carries on mixed farming, and is a shrewd and successful man. He considers the Province of Ontario good enough for any man who wants to work. He is a Roman Catholic, active in the interests of his church, and a Liberal in politics. In 1884 he m. Margaret Snelling.
