STEWART, Alexander (d.), came to Canada and Puslinch Tp. in 1853, and d. about 1855. Issue: Allan, Duncan, John, Donald, Hugh, Mrs. Robert Valens, Mrs. Duncan Cameron ("Lochiel") and Janet. Allan Stewart came to Puslinch Tp. in 1833 with the McDiarmids, and set. on lot 25, front con. 1. Duncan and Donald followed in 1843. John and Mrs. Valens came in 1844, stopping that winter in Nova Scotia. In 1853 the father, mother and remainder of the family came. The father only lived about two years after he arrived in Puslinch. The late Donald Stewart, son of Alexander, was b. near Loch Rannock, Perthshire , Scot., in 1807; d. 1889, age 82. He came to Canada in 1843, and purchased 92 acres, rear lot 20, Gore of Puslinch, from Capt. Creighton, who had it as a grant from the Crown. There were a few logs cut for a shanty, he cleared the remainder, and lived upon it until his death. He was a man of strong personality and convictions; a quiet nature and of strict integrity for which he sometimes suffered; a fighting Reformer, but never held office of any kind. In religious views he was a Presbyterian. In 1843 he m. Catherine Cameron in Scot. Issue: Elizabeth, living on the homestead with Allan; Mrs. John Smith, Aberfoyle; Alexander, in N.W.T.; Dr. Dugald, a physician at Teeswater; Allan, on the homestead; Duncan, Williamston , Mich; Donald, lot 21, Gore Puslinch, where the original family of Alexander Stewart lived; Duncan, set. finally in Mich.; Hugh, at Saginaw, Mich.; John (d.) Crieff, and Allan.

Allan Stewart has always worked the homestead, lot 20, Gore, which he now owns. He has held all the municipal offices of the township. He was Councillor 6 years, Dep. Reeve 3 years, Reeve 3 years, County Councillor 1896-1900, Warden in 1899, and County Valuator in 1901. He is popular, and a man who has not been spoiled by office. He is Independent in his views, and does what he thinks right , even if it is against public opinion. His services have been of great value to Puslinch. He is a Presbyterian and politically an Ind. Liberal. He m. Jennie Paddock, dau of the later Richard Paddock, of Puslinch. Issue: Donald Alexander.
