STEFFLER, George Adam
(d.). This old pioneer was b. in Alsace, Germany, in 1783, and was in the army
of the first Napoleon in 1814, as despatch carrier, and while so employed
contracted the rheumatism from which he never fully recovered. He came to
Canada in 1831 and stopped in Waterloo Co., coming over to Puslinch in 1832,
where he purchased 100 acres. Lot 2, con. 7, and there settled. He m. Elizabeth
Weinsparger in Alsace. He d. in 1867, age 84, while is wife d. in 1869, age 84.
Their son Casper Steffler, b. Alsace, Germany, in 1817, was fourteen years old
when the family came to Canada. He was practically brought up in Puslinch and
spent his days there. He was m. twice, his first wife being Mary Kaiser, Leon
Steffler, LL.B. of South Dakota, being a son of this marriage. His second wife
was Mary Kennedy. Mr. Steffler was an energetic man and very successful,
leaving a fine property, consisting of 125 acres fully equipped in con. 7. Of
his family Elizabeth, is the wife of John Brennan of the Excise Dept., Windsor;
Mary is the wife of David Brennan, grocer, of Chatham; Peter and Mrs. Alvois
Schwinn are in Carstairs Alberta; Andrew and Adam reside in Guelph City while
William owns the old homestead in Puslinch, where he carried on mixed farming;
his sister Caroline, wife of the late Nicholas Fady, of Chatham keeping house
for him. The family are members of the Roman Catholic church and have always
been held in high esteem as citizens.
