SPRINGER, Stephen , was b. in the township of Blenheim, Oxford Co., and is a son of the late Richard Springer and Hannah (Babcock) Springer, who were pioneers in Blenheim Tp., where Richard Springer came from Pennsylvania shortly after the war of 1812. He was a successful farmer in Blenheim Tp., where he cleared up his farm and passed the remainder of his days. His brother Moses Springer was for some years a member of the Ontario Legislature from Waterloo Co. and was Sheriff of that county.

Stephen Springer received his elementary education at the home schools and then attended Dr. Tasse's famous Grammar School at Galt. He was operator and ticket agent with the G.T.R. for four years and was station agent on the Canadian Pacific Ry. for nine years at Elora. In 1889 he purchased the flour, feed, and grocery business of F. Smith as well as the livery business adjoining, also coal and produce business. These business ventures he ran until 1902, when he was appointed Bursar of the O.A.C., which position as well as Supt. to which he was appointed in 1904, he still occupies. During his residence in Elora he not only became quite prominent in business matters but in municipal affairs as well. He was in the Elora Council for some years, and was Reeve of the village two years. He was County Councillor 1900, and re-elected by acclamation in 1901, in which year he was also elected Warden of the county. He was appointed J.P. some years ago. In politics he is a Liberal and before his appointment to the present position was quite active in political matters. His name was before the Liberal convention as a M.L.A. candidate, but he withdrew, being in favor of Col. J. M. Gibson. In 1879 he m. Alice Bladgley, of Haldiman Co.
