SPIERS, Pringle, Jr
. (d.), b. Roxburghshire, Scot., 1815, d. Guelph Tp. He was the grandson of the
late Robert Grieve, who was b. in Roxburghshire, Scot., and who came to New
York in 1820; not liking that place, he returned to Scot. and in 1830 came to
Canada and purchased from the Can. Co., 400 acres of land in the "Paisley
Block," upon which settled. He d. the following year, and was buried on his
farm, it being the first death and the first funeral in that settlement. Robert
Grieve left one child, who m. Pringle Spiers, Sr.; the latter d. in Scot., and
his widow and two children, John Pringle and Agnes came to Canada, took
possession of, and set. on this land. John d. unm., 1881, age 67, Agnes also
died unm. The Spiers family were possessed of means, and were thus enabled to
employ help to clear their farm. They are said to have owned the first pair of
horses in the neighborhood, and for years John Spiers teamed to Dundas.
The late Pringle Spiers, Jr., m. Catherine McIntosh, dau. of the late Alexander McIntosh in 1838; she was a woman of remarkable ability and contributed greatly to his success. Issue: Robert G., Mrs. Alex. Hadden, Alexander and John. Robert G., m. Mary Amos, dau. of the late John Amos. Issue: Mrs. J. G. Baxter. He owns the old homestead where his great grand-father, Robert Grieve, set. and on which he and other members of the family are buried. This farm contains 116 acres. He exhibits with pardonable pride the silver snuff-box owned by the late Robt. Grieve. Alexander and John owned part of the Grieve Farm containing 200 acres, just across the road, which they worked in conjunction until Alexander's death in 1905, at the age of 51.
