SMITH, Joseph , (d.), late of Peel, was b. in Vaughan Tp. 1816, d. in 1905. He set. in Peel in 1854 and owned 100 acres, lot 20, con. 12. At the time of purchase only a small clearing had been made. Mr. Smith cleared the balance of the farm, and passes the remainder of his days upon it. He was a cautious man, of strict integrity, prompt in his payments and successful in his enterprises.

He was a member of the Church of England and a Conservative, supporting the best man, rather than following party dictation. In 1847 he m. Mahala Cook, of Thornhill, who is still living on the old homestead in Peel, age 80. Issue: William, John, George, Mrs. Thos. Gaby, set. in Toronto; Joseph H., Sarah M., Mrs. Robert McConnell, set. Peel; Walter C. and Elizabeth.

William, m. Margaret Rumble, and owns lot 18, con. 15, Peel, where he lives. Issue: George H., William C., Lorenzo, Charles H. and Joseph. John, m. Martha Stephenson, and is a carpenter in Alma. Issue: Thomas G., Ethel, Joseph A. and Sarah J. Joseph H., m. Mary Doyle. He owns lot 15, con. 14, and is engaged in mixed farming, and feeding cattle for export. He is a member of the Church of England and a Conservative. Issue: Eva, Joseph, Walter C., Charles A., and William L.
