SMITH, James , (d.), of Puslinch, was b. Dumfriesshire, Scot., in 1812, and d. in 1857, age 45. His father was a farmer in Scot., at Linhall, and was well-to-do. The late James Smith was a well educated man, and he and his brother Alexander were among the best informed and leading men of the section. James came to Can. In 1832, and came into possession of the old Patrick farm of 100 acres, lot 21, con. 7, Puslinch. He took an active interest in everything for the welfare of the community. He was an Elder in the first Pres. Church is Guelph, where he always attended worship. In politics he was a Liberal. He held the office of Clerk of the Court of Request. He was a man of kindly disposition, social and popular with all classes, and was energetic in his business affairs. He m. Janet Patrick, who d. 1865, at the age of 45. Issue: Charles P., John, Joseph J., Mrs. Charles Botton, Teeswater; James, Elizabeth, Adam and Walter, all of whom were b. on the farm. Charles P., set. in Bruce Mines, and is now retired. John, m. Priscilla Hammersley, set. in Kansas, and is now retired. Joseph J., was b. on the old farm in 1842, where he has always lived. He was a carpenter and framer by trade. He owns the old homestead of his father, also the John McKenzie 100 acres, and the farm of George Shatz, the founder of Aberfoyle, in all 200 acres. He is a member of the Pres. Church and a Liberal. He was a School Trustee and a Director of the Puslinch Agr. Society for 30years. He has never sought or held other office, although often solicited. He has acquired his property practically on his own exertions, and all of his family are well educated. He m. Caroline Hammersley, dau. of the late John Hammersley, spoken of in this work. Issue: Mabel, teacher in Qu'Appelle; James, in New Liskeard; Pricilla, a trained nurse in Toronto; Murial Patrick, in Toronto, and Caroline J., in Toronto.

James Is a successful business man in Rochester, N.Y. Adam was a very successful farmer in Manitoba, where he d. leaving about 800 acres of land in Portage Plains.

Walter is a large farm owner in Portage Plains.

Jos. Smith, son of James, is located in New Liskeard
