SMITH, George,
came to Canada from Ireland in 1840, and set. in Toronto. He
had the following issue: Mrs. Edward Ogden, Peel; John Thomas, near Portage;
George, Man.; Samuel, Man.; and Mrs. John Mitchell, Arthur.
John was b. in Ireland, and came to Canada with his parents in 1840, at twelve years of age. He first set. in Arthur, and about 1850 took up 300 acres in Maryborough for himself and brothers. Thomas, however, not caring to stay at home, Robert and John divided the 300 acres, each taking 150. He cleared the farm and lived upon it until he retired to Rothsay in 1898. He is a member of the English church and a Conservative, and was Trustee of S .S. No. 7, for some years. He m. Catharine Ogden. Issue: Mrs. David T. Small, Arthur; Mrs. George Edmonson, N.D., John, d. N.D.; George W., Henry, N.D.; Edward and Sydney, near Medicine Hat; Arthur, in Arthur Tp.; Mrs. John Kippon, N.D.; Mrs. Thomas Walker, near Medicine Hat, and Oscar, D. Maryborough. George W., was b. on the homestead, where he has lived with the exception of the period between 1885 and 1898, in North Dakota. Since 1903 he has retired from active business and rents his farm to Samuel Kay. He is a member of the English Church, and a Conservative. He m. Maggie, dau. of James Mitchell, Maryborough.
