SMART, Charles (d.), b. in Cairnie, Aberdeenshire, Scot., 1810, where he received his education, and spent the earlier years of his life. In 1847, accompanied by his wife and family, he came to Canada, settling in Fergus. Like most of the pioneers, his only resources were a good constitution and an ambition to succeed. He received employment in the vicinity of Fergus, afterward renting a farm in Nichol.

In 1856, he came to Minto and purchased 100 acres, lot 22, con. 2. He was one of the first in that locality, who took an interest in Presbyterianism, and took an active part in the formation of what in now known as Knox Church, Palmerston, of which he was an earnest and active elder. In 1878, he sold his farm to his son William Smart, and moved to Huron Co., where he died in 1882.

The family have not only been successful, but are respected members of the communities where they reside. Mr. Smart m. Margaret Brander, also of Aberdeenshire, Scot. The children of this union being: Margaret, Lucknow; Mrs. James Baird, Ashfield; Peter, Brant Tp.; Mrs. James Martin, Minto Tp.; Alexander, N. Dakota; Mrs. John Gracie, Toronto, and William, who m. Jane Irwin, of Alma, and lives on the old homestead, to whom were born: Alexander and Will. L., of N. Dakota; Irwin (d.), and Margaret Lily and Edwin at home.
