SIMPSON, John
, emigrated to Canada from the Orkney Island. His wife was Elizabeth Brock,
sister of Capt. Brock, who piloted the British Fleet in the Black Sea during
the Crimean War of 1854. Mr. Simpson purchased lot 6, con. 8, West Garafraxa,
for $13.50 per acre, in 1856. He cleared it all and was a sturdy, fine old
settler. He d. 1892, and his wife, predeceased him in 1886, both are buried in
the McKee cemetery. Their family consists of one son and one daughter, William,
and Jessie, who resides with her brother.
William, owns and occupies the old homestead. The modern stone house, fine bank barn, and out-buildings, as well as beautiful grounds planted with evergreen trees, may be credited to William's improvements, since he came into possession. The spruce grove, which so beautifies the grounds, was planted from nursery ground stock. Mr. Simpson carries on mixed farming, and his property is highly rated in the township assessment. He is a Presbyterian, and a Conservative. In 1866, he m. Matilda Hill, dau. of the late John Hill, Tp. Clerk, of West Garafraxa. Issue: Bessie, John, David, and Jessie.
