SHAW, Matthew , b. Sligo, Ire., 1826. He came to Canada in 1850 with his mother and her family of 8 children, and purchased a farm in Dufferin Co. for $400 and stayed there for 7 years. when they sold out for $2,000 and moved to Arthur Tp. and purchased 200 acres lot 18, con. 10, which was all bush. He cleared it and never had any financial help. The family now own in Arthur Tp. land valued at $20,000. Mr. Shaw deserves great credit for assisting his mother to raise the family. He had the satisfaction of seeing all of his sons with the exception of Wesley, settled around him in comfortable circumstances. He was a Steward for years in the Methodist church, and a Conservative in politics. In 1852 he m. Christina Watson, who d. in 1872, age 42, when the oldest child was 12 years old, and the youngest two weeks. Issue: Mrs. Johnston Shaw, Arthur; Melville, Samuel and Matthew W., in Arthur; Isabella and John, at home, and Wesley in the N.W.

Melville lives upon and owns 100 acres, lot 18, con, 9, where he carries on mixed farming. He has modern buildings and fine stock, and is very successful. In religion belongs to the Plymouth Brethren Church, and in politics is a Conservative. In 1892 he m. Mary Adair. Issue: Harry A., Margaret C., Wesley E., and Orley C.
