SEGSWORTH, William
(d.), was b. Toronto, 1836, and d. in 1904, age 68. He was a blacksmith by
trade, at which he worked in Bolton. In 1866 he came to Luther and purchased
and cleared the present farm, 100 acres, lot 8, con. 10, which he improved and
made a first-class home. He was a well educated man, and perhaps should have
occupied a higher sphere than that of a pioneer farmer. He was Councillor and
Reeve, and was also Justice of the Peace for some years. He had an income, and
used the same for the benefit of the county. He m. Phillis Nunn, who d. in
1901, age 65. Mrs. Segsworth took a very active interest in church matters, and
it was through her efforts that the first Baptist church was established in
Luther Tp. She was Supt. of the Sunday School until the time of her death. Many
of the people in Luther Tp. thank Mrs. Segsworth for their religious training.
It was largely through her efforts that her children were educated, some of
whom now hold prominent places in the learned professions. Issue: Mrs. Hodges,
Buffalo; Fred V., Cal.; Mrs. McNaughton, on the homestead; John, Luther;
William, rancher in California.; Charles, Baptist minister, Fort Francis; Mrs.
Cowan, Man.; Robert , student, McMaster; Edward, Alfred, Cuba; and Nellie.
Edward b. 1875 owes 100 acres, lot 9, con. 10, West Luther. He carries on mixed farming, and has up-to-date buildings, and is just starting a herd of thoroughbred Durhams.
