SCOTT, James . This sturdy pioneer of Puslinch Tp., was horn at Ettriebridge-end, Selkirkshire, and used to herd cows in Selkirkshire at 8 years of age. In 1837, when he was 13 years old, he set sail with his mother and step-father, James Murray, who d. eighteen months after arrival, on the vessel "Adelaide," bound from Greenoch to Quebec. He spent that winter in Beverly Tp., working on the Galt and Dundas stone road. In 1838, they came to Puslinch and set. on 100 acres, lot 6, con. 10, which was a Clergy Reserve property. He cleared this farm, and has since resided on it. He is a self-educated man, as all the schooling he obtained was in Scot. Until 1881, when he lost his sight, he took a great interest in political and municipal questions, on which he kept himself well posted. He served as School Trustee for a few years, but aside from this, never held public office. He is a zealous Christain, a Presbyterian, and a Liberal of the old guard. He m. first, Margaret Anderson, and second, Elizabeth Johnstone, who was the first white child b. in the neighbourhood, and was cradled in a sap trough. Of his first family, Mrs. Duncan Graham lives in Guelph; John, is a cattle dealer at Owen Sound. He m. Miss Ellen Clark, a native of Aberdeen, Scot. Mrs. Geo. King, set. in Grey Co.; David, set. in Haldimand Co.; George, d. 1890, at 36, set. in Guelph; Peter, is caretaker of the Forbes' property, Brock road, Guelph, and Thomas set. Grey Co. Of his second family, Mrs, Jno. Woods, set. Hamilton; Craster, on the homestead; Mary is at home; James. lives in Toronto; William is in Fernie, B.C., and Robert is at home. Craster, unm., runs the home farm, 100 acres; he keeps good stock, and has his farm in a fine state of cultivation. He is a Presbyterian, and a Liberal in politics. Mr. James Scott, was instrumental in the establishment of Arkell P.O., and it was at his suggestion that it was so called. Mr. Scott's portrait appears upon another page.
