SCARF, John
, was b. Norwich, Norflok Co., Eng., Aug 27, 1827. He is a son of Christopher
Scarf, who emigrated to Canada with his family in 1835, and set. in S. Dumfries
Tp., where he lived until his death.
John, the eldest son, was raised there. In 1852 he sailed from New York via Cape of Good Hope to Australia, where he mined for three years. Returning via England he visited his birthplace. In 1856 he purchased 200 acres of land in Howick, near the town line of Minto. This farm he helped to clear, and in 1884 added to his holdings by purchasing 100 acres, lot 42, con. 8, Minto, where his now resides. On Dec 25, 1862, he m. Louisa J. Stockton, dau. of the late William Stockton, and granddaughter of Lt. Andrew Stockton, who served on the British side in the American Revolution, and later set. in St. John N.B. The Stockton family were among the Pilgrim Fathers who set. America, as well as being United Empire Loyalist pioneers in Canada. John Scarf is a man of good education, as well as an experienced traveller. In 1890 he crossed the continent via the C. P. R., spending some time in British Columbia and California. He is a man of sterling qualities and strict integrity, and has frequently been called upon to act a executor of the estates of deceased neighbors. No family in the community is held in higher esteem than the Scarf family. Issue: Lucinda C. m. Rev. W. S. Pritchard; Mary M. m. Ernest Pritchard; Louisa J. (d.) m. Joseph Pritchard; Benjamin lives at home. All of the family are members of the Congregational church, and in politics Mr. Scarf is a Liberal.
