SAIGEON, Mitchell R.
, of Maryborough, was b. in King Tp., York Co., Ont., in 1817, and came to
Maryborough in 1881. Mr. Saigeon had no money to start with. He cleared 100
acres in King, and improved the farm so that it brought $7,500 when sold. Mr.
Saigeon served on the jury in Toronto before coal oil lamps were used, and at a
time when Toronto was a very small town. In 1881 he purchased 200 acres in
Maryborough, lot 17, con. 4,. He has raised a large family, and provided them
all with good educations. He has been a man of great personal activity, and at
the time of writing, although a man of 88, is smart and interesting in
conversation. He is an influential and highly respected citizen. He has been
Steward of the Methodist church, and a Conservative. In 1854 he m. Rachael
Love. Issue: Ambrose (d.), Sarah J. (d.), Walter, in Maryborough; John, an
auctioneer at Maple, Ont.; William, at home; Henry, Bert, Mrs. Badley, Edgerton
and Joseph, in the N.W.; Ida, in Toronto; and Nelson, in the N.W.
William Saigeon lives on and works the homestead. He is a Methodist and a Conservative. In 1895 he m. Jennie Butler. Issue: Nelson, Harold, and Vera. Nelson is a Methodist and a Conservative. He m. Ellen Slimmon in 1891. Issue: Clifford and Wilbert. He is now in the N.W., and is highly respected. From: Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario.
