RUTHERFORD, John (d.), b. Clarke Tp., 1837, and was raised there. In 1862 he came to W. Garafraxa and purchased his farm, lot 1 con, 4, where he settled. The following year he m. Elizabeth Marr. He was an energetic man and very successful and took a leading part in the affairs of the community. Was an Elder of the Presbyterian church for nearly forty years, and while he was an Liberal in politics and took a healthy interest in the questions of the day, he never sought municipal honors. On his death in 1904 the community lost one of its most useful and respected citizens. He left a widow and the following issue: William, Joseph, Albert, Mrs. William Grieve, Mrs. Andrew Bain and Mrs. William H. Mathews.

William, m. Mary A. Grieve set. Fergus. Joseph m. Miss Shaw, owns and lives on 100 acres, lot 31, con. 4 Eramosa.

Albert, unm. , owns the old homestead in W. Garafraxa, lot 1, con. 4.

William M. , the oldest son of the late John Rutherford, until recently has occupied the farm which is how owned and resided upon by his brother Joseph. He is now retired in Fergus in Union near St. David's St., where he has erected a fine residence of cement brick with a stable of the same material. When the improvements to his grounds are completed it will be one of the finest homes on the west side of the Grand River. He m. Mary A. Grieve, whose father, the late John Grieve, belonged to one of the oldest families in Eramosa. Mr. Grieve removed to Fergus where he lived retired from 1884 until his death in 1904. He is mentioned in the general history of Eramosa and West Garafraxa.

Albert, unm., is the youngest son of the late John Rutherford and succeeded to the homestead of 175 acres lot 1, con. 4, West Garafraxa. It is a fine old place with fine residences and splendid barns, and he has commenced to improve it so that it bids fair to retain the best tradition of the unusually successful and respectable family to which he belongs.
