RUSSELL, Thomas
, (d.), was b. Co. Antrim, Ire. and arrived in Canada in 1850. After living one
year at Guelph he bought 100 acres in West Garafraxa, and later 100 acres,
which with another 25 acres since added, constitutes the property now owned by
his son Robert. His wife is still living and resides with Robert; she is 91
years of age, and is the oldest woman in the township.
Robert b. Garafraxa 1854, is one of the largest stock breeders in the county, and in the breeding of trotting horses is one of the foremost in the Province. His standard bred trotting horses are well known, and some have been bought to send to the North West for breeding purposes. His standard bred trotting stallion "Commander Millar," is equal to anything of his type to be found in the Dominion. He also owns two thoroughbred registered Morgans, which he imported from near the American Government stock farm. One of his mares of his own breeding, Lady Belwood (registered), promises to be a very fast pacer. As well as being the largest breeder of trotting stock in the county, Mr. Russell in addition breeds thoroughbred cattle. He is a fine judge and stands among the foremost as a stock man. In politics he is a Conservative, and in religion a Presbyterian. In 1892 he m. Ellen Gingrick. They have six daughters and one son, Thompson.
