RUSSELL, Joseph , b. Oxford Co. 1854. He learned the carpenter's trade in Oxford Co., at which he worked for some time. He came to Arthur Tp. in 1880 and rented a farm for eleven years, when he bought the present homestead of 100 acres, lot 1, con. 8. This farm was not in a very good condition when Mr. Russell took it, but he has improved it and put up modern buildings. Mr. Russell is an extensive cattle and hog buyer and has always taken an active interest in stock, and has imported a good class of cattle which has helped to improve the stock of the country generally. When he came to Arthur Tp. he had very little means; now he owns 100 acres in Arthur, 100 acres in Proton, and 70 in Normanby, all of which he has acquired by his own exertions. He is much respected by the entire community, and is a Presbyterian and a Liberal. In 1876 he m. Matilda Hatch. Issue: William , in Fort William; Annie, at home; Nellie, in New Ontario; John, N.W.T.; Robert, Bertha, Maggie, Ruby and George at home.
