Early Settlers of Wellington County

RUDD Family . The founder of this family in Canada was the late Nathaniel Rudd, who was born in Norfolk, England in 1795, and came to Canada in 1836, settling first in Beverly. In 1842, he took up a farm in Seneca ownership and after clearing it found that it belonged to the Indian Reserve, and that he could not get title to it although he received pay for his labor. He then moved to Hespeler, and from there to Fergus. He died in 1880. Issue: Matthew, Sr., William, George, Sr., Henry, Samuel, John, James, Mrs. Ellis and Mrs. Benjamin Pritchett.

George, Sr. was born in Norfolk, Eng. in 1821, came to Canada with his parents in youth. He m. Hannah Watson, and settled finally in Puslinch, where he purchased 100 acres. Previous to this he was engaged in teaming between Preston, Hamilton and Galt. Mr. Rudd and his sons, William, Jr. and Matthew, were the best known breeders of Devonshire cattle in Canada, and took prizes and gold medals both in Canada the U.S. He died in 1886. Issue: William J., Edward, John, Daniel, Samuel, Robert, Mathew, Stephen, Mrs. James Carter, Mrs. Walter Dawson and Mrs. Henry Hawes.

William Jr. born in 1844 in Wellington County m. Susan Wiloughby. Issue: Mrs. George Wilson, Mrs. Wesley Taylor, Ralph, Cleveland, Vernice, Reginald, Renie and Edna. He started life with small means, adjoining Arkell, and in 1887, bought Lot 1, Concession 1 (150 acres), Eramosa, where he has since resided. Mr. Rudd as before mentioned, has been a very successful breeder of Devonshire cattle, taking several principal prizes at the World's Fair, Chicago International, also at Quebec, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Kingston and elsewhere. Ralph, his oldest son, m. Emma Wilson and lives on his farm near Arkell. Cleveland is the present manager of the Eramosa farm. He m. Ethel McFarland. Of the other members of George Rudd, Sr.'s family, Edward resides in Arkell. John m. Elizabeth Sellers, and resides in Guelph City. Daniel m. Laura Smith and settled in Guelph City. Issue: Arthur.

Samuel is a Vet. S. in Woodstock; Robert resides in Guelph City.

Mathew, who was associated with his father in the Devonshire cattle business, is a farmer in Eramosa Township. He m. Esther H. Brown. Issue: Otho, George, Russel.
