ROACH, Moses
(d.), b. Wexford Co., Ire., 1813; d. 1863, age 50. He came first to New
Brunswick, where he was for some years in the ship timber business. In 1850 he
came to Maryborough and purchased 100 acres, lot 10, con. 1. He cleared about
50 acres of it, and lived there until his death. In religion he was a Roman
Catholic. He m. Miss Honorah Neville, in the city of St. John, N.B. , who d.
1904, age 85. Of their family these lived until adult age: John and Mrs. Daniel
Driscoll, b. St. John, New Brunswick; William , Michael and Joseph M., b. in
Maryborough. Of these William is in the employ of the P. & M. Ry., Bay City,
Mich.; Michael, unm., owns the homestead; he is a successful man, and is living
retired in Arthur.
Joseph M. was b. in Maryborough. He first attached the public school at Tralee, and later both the public and separate schools in Arthur. After completing his education he started in business in 1888, as a flour and feed merchant. In 1890-1 he added the live stock trade and the purchase of farm products on the streets. In 1898, he bought out Mr. James Kelleher's grain business, and in 1900 he purchased the Arthur elevator from Messrs. Clark and Hannah, which has a capacity of 70,000 bushels. With Dr. Coughlin, he purchased the Arthur flax mill in 1901, and has since taken over the entire business. He has been a member and Chairman of the High School Board for two years, Clerk of the village of Arthur for 7 years, and Secy. Of the Agricultural Society five years. In 1905 he contested West Wellington for M.P.P. against Mr. Tucker. Mr. Roach is one of Arthur's rising men, both as a citizen in business and as a politician. He m. Julia Madden.
