RETTIE, James
(d.), emigrated form Aberdeenshire, Scot., 1847. He was one of the
Sec'y-Treasurer of the Green Settlement school, erected and opened in 1854, and
his son James has in his possession the first minute book, which is still the
property of the school section, in which hundreds of entries of that date in
his father's hand writing, like copper plate, are to be seen. James Rettie,
Sr., was one of the pioneer supporters of temperance, and raised the first barn
in the township where liquors were not used at the raising. He m. Christina
Eldrick, who d. in 1874, while his death occurred in 1884. This pioneer couple
are buried at Fergus Cemetery.
James Rettie, son of James Rettie Sr., was b. in 1856, on the old homestead, lot 16, con. 2, purchased by his father from the Crown. He owns 100 acres, while his brother Joseph is connected with the C.P.R. and resides in Guelph. Both are staunch and sterling men universally respected. Mr. James Rettie has been School Trustee, and is an Elder in the Presbyterian church, and an Independent in politics. In 1885 he m. Margaret Mitchell.
