REID, REV. Hugh
(d.). The subject of this sketch was b. in Islay, Argyleshire, Scot., in 1818.
He came to Canada in 1844, and set. in Toronto, where he studied for the
ministry , under the late Dr. Fyfe, afterwards the founder of the Woodstock
Baptist College. In 1847, he m. Margaret McKechnie, also of Islay, Scot. In
1860 he, with his wife and family, moved to Erin Tp., having purchased the west
half of lot 13, con. 7, where he resided until his death in 1895.
Mr. Reid was one of the pioneer ministers of Canada, and his great physical strength and powers of endurance well fitted him for the work. During a period of about thirty-five years he held pastorates in the following places: Eldon, Cheltenham, Belfountain, Hillsburg and Erin Village. He was the beloved and sympathetic friend of all, and the impress of his strong personality will long remain in the community. Besides his widow (now living in Erin Village) he left a family of three sons and six daughters. The eldest son, Robert Hugh, is still resident of this county, the next, Donald J. is in business in Toronto; and the youngest, Joseph N., died on the old homestead near Brisbane in 1902. Robert Hugh Reid is the eldest son of the late Rev. Hugh Reid. He was b. in Belfountain, Co. of Peel, in 1857, and came to Erin with his parents in 1860. In 1886 he m. Bessie McKinnon, dau, of the late Neil McKinnon, of Erin Tp., and set. on the west of lot 11, con. 2, Erin. Two years later he purchased the west half of lot 7, con. 3, Erin, and he now owns 230 acres of land. Mr. Reid is an enterprising and progressive farmer, and owes his success mainly to his own efforts. In religion he is a Baptist, and in politics a Liberal.
