REA, John
(d.), brother of David Rea, was b, in Co. Antrim, Ireland, and came with his
brother to Canada as mentioned, settling near Lachute, and later came to
Eramosa Tp., where he purchased lot 24, con. 2, and there settled. This farm he
cleared and later sold to Alexander McGladdery, who came in at the same time.
He later purchased lots 31 and 32, con. 2, 300 acres, which he cleared, and on
this farm he passed the remainder of his days, passing away in 1854. He was a
very successful man, of strict integrity, and a Presbyterian. He was a Liberal
in politics, He m. Catharine Forrester. Issue: David, Mrs. James S. Armstrong,
of Fergus; William (d.), East Garafraxa; Mrs. Alex. Cooper, Orangeville;
Charles (d.), East Garafraxa; Mrs. Jas. Semple, East Garafraxa; Mrs. McRory,
London; John B., and Robert in Cal.
David, b. Eramosa, in 1836, and was here raised and passed through all the experiences of pioneer life. He succeeded to a part of the homestead, 100 acres, lot 32, con. 2, and later bought lot 1, con. 1, West Garafraxa. He still owns the Eramosa farm. He took a very prominent part in the affairs of Eramosa, being in the Council for a number of years, and School Trustee for many years. He was a Director of the Central Wellington Agr. Soc. For over thirty years, and President five or six times. He was a Director of the Eramosa Mutual Fire Ins. Co., and President for several years. As a successful farmer and raiser of thoroughbred Shorthorn cattle he was well known, and took a great many prizes at the various fairs throughout the district. He m. Jane, dau. of the late James S.
